If you’ve been injured in an accident, you may believe that you can face the insurance company alone and negotiate a favorable settlement for your injuries. Almost half of all people injured in accidents do just that – attempt to DIY a solution and settle their own cases. According to the insurance industry, however, people who negotiate their own settlements are leaving a lot of money on the table. For most injured people, the insurance industry knows that there is significant value in hiring an attorney for your injury claim. Having a lawyer on your side can get you three times as much money as trying to settle your case yourself.
That’s right. According to a study by The Insurance Research Council (IRC) in its 2014 report titled “Attorney Involvement In Auto Injury Claims” injured people who hire a lawyer, on average, a three and a half times larger settlement.
The below figure, from the 2014 report, shows the average car crash settlement for people with an attorney and those without an attorney. 
According to the insurance industry, the value of hiring an attorney was a nearly 39% increase in the total settlement recovered. When subtracting attorney’s fees, the injured party still received almost three times more than they would have without an attorney. The insurance industry doesn’t want you to hire a lawyer; they know that a good lawyer will make them pay.
There are many reasons why you should hire a lawyer for your injury case, but the insurance industry knows that having a lawyer on your side makes your case much more valuable.
