What You Should Do After a Car Crash

Car crashes happen thousands of times per year. In fact, 2015 and 2016 were two of the deadliest years for drivers in American history. When you get in a car crash, there are a few things you need to do to ensure that you are making the best of a bad situation. I help people navigate these issues every day. Here are some helpful tips in the event that you are in an accident.

Be prepared for the crash:

  • Keep a pen and paper in your car, along with your insurance information, photo identification and a copy of the title to the vehicle.
  • It also helps to have a card with any relevant medical information for you and your family.

Immediately after a crash:

  • Take a deep breath, stay calm and check for injuries;
  • Always call an ambulance, even if the crash is minor.
  • If the crash is minor, move cars to a safe place, out of traffic. If major, stay put until an ambulance arrives.
  • Turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights for safety
  • Call the police, even if the crash is minor.
  • Remember the insurance company is not your friend, do not speak to them without a lawyer.
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. If necessary, take an ambulance from the scene of the crash to the nearest emergency room.

Other important tips after your crash:

  • Do not sign any document unless it’s for the police.
  • Do not give statements to anyone except the police.
  • Do not speak to the person who caused the crash or their insurance company.
  • Make immediate notes about the accident, including specific damages to all vehicles involved, witness information, injuries, statements you hear or make, etc.
  • State only the facts, and limit your discussion of the accident to the police and your attorney.
  • If possible, don’t leave the accident scene before the police and other drivers do.
  • Call the attorneys at The Collins Law Firm 630-527-1595 for advice right away.

Lastly, if you are injured be sure to consult with an attorney before signing any documents, making any statements or speaking with anyone about the accident. If you are injured, you may be entitled to compensation. A Chicago and Illinois car accident attorney can help you recover for your injuries. Make sure your rights are protected by contacting a personal injury attorney with The Collins Law Firm as soon as possible.
