The number one question that my clients ask me is “who’s going to pay my medical bills?”
If you’re in a crash or you’re injured through no fault of your own medical bills will start pile up. You need to get treatment, you need to get better and you shouldn’t have to worry about how these bills are going to get paid.
There are three really simple ways that you can get your bills paid in a crash.
- Use your private health insurance. It sounds counterintuitive, the at-fault driver’s insurance should pay for your bills and if you hire a good lawyer they will, but in order to make sure that your bills don’t go to collections or that your credit isn’t hurt, you should use your private health insurance. That will make sure that your bills get paid on time.
- Call your own car insurance and see if you have what’s called medical payments coverage or “med pay.” Sometimes in your insurance policy, there’s money set aside specifically for your bills if you’re hurt.
- The last way is a way you can only utilize if you have a lawyer and it’s called treating on a lien. With liens what you can do is that you can have your provider, the therapist, the hospital, whoever, send the bill to your attorney and then your attorney will negotiate a bill and pay it out of the settlement proceeds if and when your case settles. This can also make sure that you get the bills off of your plate and you can focus on getting better.
These are three simple ways to get your medical bills paid if you’re injured through no fault of your own but the most important thing is to take full advantage of these three ways it’s best to have an attorney guide you through the process.
